Two Cultures: 'Scroll Fragment'

A little more detail, at this stage my palette looks more interesting....

1st Stage of painting the 'Scroll Fragment'

Garden chairs - the perfect paper drying surface!

Hand made paper drying in the sun; long 'scroll fragment' on Right
A few days ago the sun was convincing us all we were anywhere but in Britain, so I spent time outside as it was perfect paper making weather! The smaller pieces will become a red 'Fragment' sari painting, similar to the 'Blue Peacock Fragment, and the long piece on the right, about 135cm length will become a 'Scroll Fragment' which I intend to back with board and so create something between a sculpture and a painting. The excellent photos are courtesy of friend Mel Evans, highly recommended as 'Artist's companion photographer'...

Current work for Sale: Blue Peacock Fragment panel

Blue Peacock 'Fragment' panel framed in white wood
Framed Dimensions: H 81 cm x W: 51 cm
£300
This is the first in my new 'Fragment' series, using my own hand made paper and the usual oil and pastel and resin. The resulting 'fragment' has been float mounted and framed within a 5cm deep frame which will offer the necessary protection.

Lata's Sari

Lata's Sari: Detail from bottom left of painting

Lata's Sari: final stage
This panel painting is now ready for it's final resin stage, always a nervous time for me as the resin will usually do what it wants! It has a mind of its own in terms of where it will 'pool' and where it will leave just the barest film over the surface. I love this added dimension of texture.

Lata's Sari

Lata's Sari: An early stage
H: 123 cm x W 63 cm

This large panel painting (H: 123 cm x W 63 cm) is shown here in it's first stages. I have used silver enamel this time, over a base of  oil paint in various shades of eau de nil and leaf green, on the usual base of Thai paper on board. This will be resined at it's final stage. Highlights have been added in Alarazine Crimson and some depth using Ultramarine and Cobalt blue.

Lata's Sari

Sketch book page 1 for 'Lata's Sari': a Chinese wallpaper postcard, and on the right a detail of the border design which I'll put on the left side of the painting. The sari has a delicate crocheted silk fringe which will be included
Sketch book page 2 for 'Lata's Sari': the sketched detail on the left will be the general placement of motifs; the border design from sketch page 1 is one the left side of the painting

embroidery motif in silver thread
This new piece is really exiting for me, I have been loaned my mum in law's wedding sari which is a wonderful pale eau de nil silk with silver thread embroidery. It's such a refreshingly cool crisp colour. I've also been thinking of Chinese painted wallpaper and have been inspired by the elegant lines of the flowering cherry tree in the postcard above, for the placement of the motifs in this painting, and for the inclusion of some of my favourite crimson into the overall colour theme.  I'll be including other motifs as I go along. This will be quite a large piece, H122cm x W61 cm,
